Tile comes up fast. Thinset doesn’t. That gap between demo day and a clean slab is where most DIY tile jobs stall, and it’s the question we get on nearly every subfloor prep call: the tile’s gone, so why is this still such a fight?

Thinset is cement-based. Once it’s cured against concrete for a few years, it’s chemically closer to the slab underneath it than to anything you’d call an adhesive. There’s no solvent that softens it back up, and no shortcut that skips the physical work. You can control the tool, the order, and the care taken not to gouge a slab you’re about to tile again.

What You’re Actually Dealing With

Old thinset sits in two forms once the tile’s off: a thin skim coat where the bond was solid, and thicker ridges or blobs where the trowel notches didn’t compress fully. The thin skim is usually fine to leave, more on that below. Ridges and blobs are the actual problem, since they’ll telegraph through new tile, throw off a self-leveling pour, or catch a floor scraper blade and stop it dead.

Age changes the job too. Thinset from a job done last year still has some give to it under a chisel. Fifteen-year-old thinset has fully cured into the slab’s surface and fights back like it’s part of the concrete now, because chemically it basically is.

Tools You’ll Need

A hammer and cold chisel handles small areas and edges, the corners a bigger tool can’t reach. For anything past a closet-sized room, that gets slow fast and your wrist knows it by lunch.

An angle grinder with a diamond cup wheel is the middle option, good for stubborn ridges and tight spots along walls where a floor scraper can’t get close. It throws a lot of dust, so pair it with a shop vac attachment or run it outside a window fan if the room allows.

A rented floor scraper, walk-behind or the smaller stand-up kind, is the right call for anything larger than a bathroom. Most equipment rental counters carry one, and it turns a weekend of chisel work into an afternoon. Set the blade angle low and let the machine do the work rather than forcing it, since forcing it just chatters the blade and skips over ridges instead of shaving them.

A chipping hammer, the kind with a flat scraper bit, is the fastest option on a full room and the one we reach for on paid jobs. It’s also the loudest and the one most likely to gouge concrete in an inexperienced hand, so if you’re renting one for the first time, practice on a small section before running it across the whole floor.

Safety gear isn’t optional here. Old thinset dust carries silica, and grinding or chipping it airborne is a real respiratory hazard, not a theoretical one. A proper N95 or better respirator, safety glasses, and hearing protection for the grinder or chipping hammer. Ventilate the room and wet the area lightly if dust control matters more than speed.

Does Vinegar or Anything Else Dissolve Thinset?

No. This comes up on nearly every removal question we get, and the answer disappoints people: vinegar is a mild acid, and cured thinset is a cement-based compound that mild acids don’t touch in any meaningful way. Pour it, soak it, scrub it overnight, and the thinset looks the same in the morning.

Commercial “mortar dissolvers” exist, and most of them are marketed harder than they perform. A few soften the very top layer of an already-thin skim coat enough to make hand-scraping slightly easier, none of them eat through a quarter-inch ridge, and none replace mechanical removal on anything beyond a light residue. If a product claims it’ll dissolve thinset overnight with no scraping required, that claim doesn’t match what cured cement actually does when it meets a chemical additive.

Save the money. A chisel, a grinder, or a rented scraper does in twenty minutes what a bottle of dissolver won’t do in a week.

How to Remove Thinset from Concrete Step by Step

Clear the room and sweep loose debris first, since tile fragments and grout crumbs left on the slab just get in the machine’s way or fly up under a grinder wheel.

Start at one corner with the chisel or grinder and work the perimeter first, six to eight inches in from every wall. That strip is where a floor scraper can’t reach cleanly, so hand tools go there before the big equipment rolls in.

Bring in the floor scraper or chipping hammer for the open field once the edges are clear. Work in overlapping passes, low blade angle, letting the tool’s own weight and vibration do the shaving instead of leaning on it. Ridges come up in curls or chips depending on how old and brittle the thinset is.

Sweep and vacuum between passes. Loose thinset chips under a scraper blade act like ball bearings and throw the machine off its line, so clearing debris every few passes keeps the cut consistent.

Do You Need to Get Every Last Bit Off?

Not always, and this is the part most DIY guides skip. A thin, flat, well-bonded skim of thinset that isn’t chipping or hollow-sounding when tapped doesn’t need to come up at all. New thinset bonds to old thinset just fine, as long as the surface is flat and clean of dust.

What does need to go is anything with texture: ridges, blobs, anywhere the surface isn’t flat within about 1/8 inch over a 10-foot span. That’s the tolerance new tile and most self-leveling compounds need to sit right, and an uneven skim under a leveling pour just telegraphs through once it’s cured.

If the leftover skim is patchy rather than uniform, a self-leveling compound over the whole floor is often faster and cheaper than chasing every last patch with a grinder. It’s a call we make on-site more than people expect, since perfect bare concrete looks better but rarely performs any better than a properly flattened surface.

Renting Equipment vs. Calling a Contractor

A weekend rental on a floor scraper or chipping hammer runs a fraction of what a contractor charges for the same square footage, and for a single bathroom or small kitchen, that math usually favours doing it yourself. Add in respirator, cup wheels, and a day off work, though, and the gap narrows fast on anything room-sized or bigger.

Where we get called in isn’t the labour, it’s the judgment calls: how much residue is actually fine to leave, whether a crack under the old tile is structural or cosmetic, whether the slab needs a leveling pour before new tile goes down. Rushing the edges is third. The perimeter strip a floor scraper can’t reach gets left half-done more often than any other part of the job, since it’s slower work with hand tools and easy to convince yourself is “close enough.” It isn’t, not once new tile or a leveling pour goes down and that strip is the one part of the floor that isn’t flat.

Not checking for asbestos on anything installed before the late 1980s is the one we flag hardest.
