That’s dense enough that a sealer has nothing to soak into. Sealing porcelain tile that’s already this tight just leaves a film sitting on the surface with nowhere useful to go.

Two exceptions change the answer. Polished or honed porcelain opens tiny surface pores during the finishing process, and grout is porous no matter what tile sits next to it. Skip the tile sealer on a standard glazed floor. Don’t skip the grout.

Why Porcelain Doesn’t Behave Like Natural Stone

Porcelain gets fired at over 1,200°C from a finer, more refined clay body than ceramic uses. That heat and the higher silica content produce a tile with almost no open pore structure left to fill. Natural stone, travertine, sandstone, even some cement-based products, stay porous by nature. Porcelain doesn’t. Nothing needs blocking because there’s nothing there to absorb stains, moisture, or the grease that ends up on a kitchen floor eventually.

Where Sealing Actually Belongs: Polished, Honed, and Unglazed Porcelain

Polishing a porcelain surface grinds it down with abrasive pads the same way a stone slab gets polished, and that process opens microscopic pores across the face. Those pores can pick up stains from wine, oil, even coloured grout haze if it isn’t wiped fast enough during install. A honed finish goes through a similar process, stopped short of the high-gloss stage, and carries some of the same risk at a lower level.

Unglazed, through-body porcelain is the other one worth flagging. Colour runs the full thickness of the tile with no glaze layer on top, which is exactly what gives it that matte, quarry-tile look homeowners like on a mudroom floor. That bare surface is more exposed than a glazed tile, and a penetrating sealer earns its keep there.

Glazed porcelain, textured porcelain, and most large-format slab product stay off this list. The glaze or the manufacturing process already does the sealing job.

What Happens If You Don’t Seal Porcelain Tile?

Usually nothing. Standard glazed porcelain cleans up the same way on day one and year ten, no sealer involved. The grout is where the neglect shows: unsealed grout darkens, holds coffee and pet stains, and grows the occasional patch of mildew in a shower that never fully dries between uses.

Skip the sealer on polished or unglazed porcelain specifically, and stains have a real shot at settling into those exposed micro-pores before anyone notices. A red wine spill on honed porcelain behaves closer to natural stone than most people assume walking into the tile aisle.

Should You Seal It Anyway?

Some installers do, even on standard glazed floors, and the case isn’t crazy. Adding a sacrificial layer in a heavy-traffic entry or a rental unit gives one more barrier between the floor finish and whatever gets tracked across it. Bathrooms and wet areas push some crews toward sealing as a habit, glazed tile or not.

Here’s the downside nobody mentions at the tile counter: sealing a non-porous surface leaves a residue with nowhere to absorb. That film sits on top, grabs dirt faster than the bare glaze would, and turns cleaning into more work than skipping the sealer entirely. We’ve stripped topical sealer off glazed porcelain kitchen floors that looked dingier sealed than they ever would have unsealed. How to Tell If Your Porcelain Is Already Sealed

Grab a permanent marker and mark an inconspicuous corner, an offcut if there’s one left in the garage. Let it sit for a minute, then wipe with rubbing alcohol or white spirit. Wipes off clean, the surface is sealed or naturally sealed-tight. Stains or won’t budge, it’s unsealed or the sealer’s long past its useful life.

A water-drop test works too, faster but less precise. Beading and sitting on the surface after a couple minutes points to a sealed or naturally low-porosity tile. Soaking straight in and darkening the surface means the tile, or more likely the grout line right next to it, is absorbing moisture it shouldn’t. On a floor that’s already tiled and grouted, run the test on both the tile face and the joint separately, since they rarely give the same answer.

Sealing Porcelain Outdoors

Patios, pool decks, outdoor stair treads: porcelain’s near-zero water absorption makes it one of the lower-maintenance choices for anything exposed to weather, sealed or not. That matters more on Vancouver Island than most places we’ve worked. Coastal rain nine months of the year, freeze-thaw cycles that hit harder near Nanaimo and up-Island than most homeowners plan for, and a porous paver would need resealing every season just to keep up.

Porcelain pavers mostly skip that maintenance cycle. Grout joints on an outdoor installation, if the pattern uses them, still benefit from a sealer rated for exterior exposure, same logic as an indoor floor, just with harsher weather doing the testing.

How Often Do You Have to Seal Porcelain Tile?

Zero times, for the standard glazed floors most of our jobs involve. For polished or unglazed porcelain that does get sealed, every three to five years is the typical reapplication window, sooner in a shower or a high-traffic mudroom that sees more wear than a formal dining room floor ever will.

Watch for the signs instead of guessing on a calendar. Water stops beading and starts soaking in, stains show up faster than they used to, that’s the sealer telling you its job is done. That water-drop test from earlier works just as well three years into ownership as it does on install day.

What Are the Downsides of Porcelain Tile?

Not needing a sealer is the upside. Trade-offs show up elsewhere, and we’ll say them straight since most tile showrooms won’t.

It’s hard. Genuinely hard to cut without the right diamond blade, which means DIY installs run into more cracked tiles and wasted material than a homeowner expects going in. It’s heavy too, especially in large-format sizes, and that adds labour cost to any install compared to a lighter ceramic. Polished porcelain gets slippery when wet, the same finish that opens those micro-pores also drops the slip resistance, which matters on a bathroom floor more than a kitchen backsplash. Cold underfoot in a Vancouver Island winter without in-floor heat, a complaint we hear on nearly every bathroom reno walkthrough. And once it’s chipped, porcelain doesn’t take a repair the way a painted surface does. A chip stays visible, colour-matched filler or not.

None of that outweighs the low-maintenance case for most floors. It’s just the part of the pitch that gets left out when someone’s only comparing porcelain against grout upkeep on natural stone.

What’s the Best Sealer for Porcelain Tile?

A penetrating, breathable sealer, if sealing is actually warranted. That means polished or honed finish, unglazed through-body tile, or grout joints on any porcelain floor. Penetrating sealers soak into whatever porosity exists and let moisture vapour pass back out, which matters more in a shower than most people think about until mildew shows up behind a topical coating that trapped it in.

Skip the glossy topical sealers marketed for a wet look. They sit on the surface, they’re not breathable, and on a tile that barely needs sealing to begin with, that film becomes the maintenance problem the sealer was supposed to solve. A colour-enhancing penetrating sealer is worth it on unglazed or honed porcelain specifically for the look, standard glazed tile has nothing for it to enhance.
