Can I Use No More Nails for Tiles?

Short answer, no. Not for anything that needs to hold up long term. LePage No More Nails is a construction adhesive, not a tile adhesive, and there’s a real difference between a product that will grab a tile and a product engineered to carry one for the next twenty years. We get asked about this constantly, usually from someone standing in the hardware aisle with a tube in hand and a backsplash half planned in their head.

The Short Answer

No More Nails will stick to tile. That part’s true, and it’s on the label. What the label doesn’t tell you is that “sticks” and “belongs in a bathroom” are two different claims. For a single decorative tile on a dry wall, low stakes, easy to redo, it can work fine. For a shower surround, a kitchen backsplash getting daily grease and steam, or any floor, it’s the wrong tool for the job.

Tile installers reach for thinset mortar because it’s rigid once cured, bonds to a porous substrate mechanically as well as chemically, and handles the constant expansion and contraction that tile goes through with temperature and moisture. Construction adhesive stays somewhat flexible. That flexibility is exactly what makes it good for trim and baseboards and exactly what makes it a liability under a tile that isn’t supposed to move.

What No More Nails Actually Is

LePage No More Nails Wet Grab is a general-purpose construction adhesive. Wood, laminate, drywall, plaster, tile, ceramic, porcelain, concrete, masonry, marble, granite, metal, PVC: the manufacturer lists all of it as compatible surfaces, and technically the bond forms on most of them. It’s rated waterproof once fully cured and gives roughly ten minutes of working time to reposition a piece before it sets.

Bostik’s version of the same product category (No More Nails is a shared brand name across a few manufacturers, LePage in Canada, Bostik and Unibond elsewhere) runs on a similar two-way contact method. Apply a bead, press the surfaces together, pull them apart to let it tack for a few minutes, then press again for the final bond. Full strength takes 12 to 72 hours depending on conditions. Read that spec sheet closely and it’s clear what the product is built for: panels, trim, mirrors, moulding, general household bonding. Tile gets one line in a long list of compatible surfaces. It’s not the product’s focus.

Where It Actually Holds Up

A single mirror tile on a dry accent wall. A small decorative piece added to trim that already carries its own fasteners. A quick fix on a loose tile that popped off somewhere it never gets wet, and you just need it to stay put rather than perform structurally. These are the jobs where construction adhesive earns its keep, and they’re common enough that keeping a tube around isn’t a bad idea.

What changes the calculation is water, weight, and time. One tile on a dry wall carries almost no load and never sees moisture cycling. A full shower wall carries dozens of tiles, constant humidity, and temperature swings every time someone runs the water hot. Different problem entirely.

Where It Fails

Wet areas are the big one. Showers, tub surrounds, anywhere water sits against the tile regularly: construction adhesive isn’t formulated for sustained water exposure the way tile-specific waterproofing membranes and thinset systems are. “Waterproof once cured” on the label means it resists water damage to the adhesive bond itself, not that it belongs behind a shower wall doing a thinset’s job.

Floors are the other big miss. Foot traffic puts shear stress on a bond that construction adhesive simply wasn’t engineered to handle at scale. One tile, sure. A whole kitchen floor, no. We’ve been called out to jobs where a homeowner tiled a small entry or laundry room with a tube of construction adhesive to save a trip to the tile shop, and within a year or two tiles were shifting, grout lines cracking, edges lifting. The adhesive held just enough to get through installation and not much longer than that.

Large-format tile makes the problem worse. Bigger tile means more weight per bond point and less forgiveness if the adhesive flexes even slightly under load. Anything over roughly 12×12 inches on a floor, skip the tube entirely.

Will No More Nails Stick on Tiles?

Yes, mechanically it bonds. The manufacturer lists tile and ceramic as compatible surfaces, and it does form a working adhesive bond on most tile types. Sticking isn’t the question that matters, though. The question is whether that bond holds up to the specific stress a given application puts on it, and for anything beyond a small dry-area fix, it usually doesn’t hold as long as a proper installation would.

What Adhesive Works Best on Tile?

Thinset mortar, chosen for the substrate and tile type. Modified thinset for large-format porcelain. A non-staining formula for natural stone like marble or travertine, since standard thinset can discolour some stone. Standard unmodified thinset works fine over cement backer board for ordinary ceramic. In wet areas, that thinset goes over a proper waterproofing membrane, not directly over drywall. That layered system, waterproofing plus the right thinset for the material, is what carries the weight and handles the moisture cycling that a tube of construction adhesive was never built for.

Will No More Nails Stick to Ceramic?

Yes, ceramic is on the compatible-surfaces list and the adhesive does bond to it. Same caveat as above though: bonding and belonging in a load-bearing, water-exposed installation aren’t the same thing. A single ceramic accent piece on a dry wall, fine. A full ceramic tile shower, that’s a thinset and membrane job.

What Is a Good Substitute for Tile Adhesive?

Nothing on a shelf really substitutes for proper thinset when the application calls for it. Premixed mastic gets close for small dry-area wall jobs, backsplashes away from the sink, decorative accents, but even mastic isn’t rated for wet areas or floors the way thinset is. If the project is genuinely small and dry, mastic or a construction adhesive can get you through. Anything touching water or foot traffic, thinset’s the only real answer.

Vancouver Island’s Damp Climate and Construction Adhesive

Central Vancouver Island runs wet roughly eight months of the year, and that sustained humidity slows the cure time on most adhesives, thinset included. Construction adhesive is no exception. A bathroom project started on a damp winter week, low airflow, humid bathroom air on top of it, can take longer to reach full cure than the label promises. Rush the grout or start using the space before that cure finishes, and a bond that was already marginal for the application gets weaker still.

We see this more on jobs around Campbell River and Courtenay in the wetter months than we ever did on similar callbacks further south. It’s not that the climate here is harsher, it’s milder than most of Canada, coastal and rarely freezing. It’s the sustained dampness that catches people out, especially on a DIY job where the adhesive never got the full window it needed before the room went back into daily use.

The Real Cost of Skipping Thinset

Tube of construction adhesive runs a fraction of what a proper thinset and membrane system costs in materials. That gap looks appealing on a small job. What it doesn’t account for is the tear-out. When a floor or shower tiled with the wrong adhesive starts failing, fixing it means pulling every tile, scraping the old adhesive off the substrate (harder than it sounds, since it doesn’t release the way thinset does), and starting over with the right materials. That’s labour on top of materials, usually more than it would have cost to do it properly the first time.
