Short answer: it will go through, eventually. Whether the tile survives the trip is the real question, and that depends on which part of the job you’re actually drilling. Grout line, no problem. Glazed porcelain face, different story entirely.

We get asked this on site visits more than almost any other tool question. Someone’s mounting a towel bar, a soap dish, a curtain rod bracket, and the drill bit in the garage is a masonry bit left over from hanging shelves on a concrete wall. It’ll cut brick and block just fine. Tile is a different material wearing a similar-looking surface, and that difference is where the cracks come from.

Why the Wrong Bit Struggles on a Glazed Surface

Masonry bits are built for brick, block, and concrete: porous, forgiving materials that don’t mind a bit chewing and grinding its way in. The carbide tip on a standard masonry bit is shaped to chip away at that kind of surface through impact, especially with a hammer drill‘s percussion function running.

Tile is glazed, hard, and dense, particularly porcelain. That same chipping action that works fine on block skates across a glazed surface instead of biting in. Skate long enough on a smooth glaze and the bit walks, the hole comes out ragged, and more often than we’d like, a hairline crack spiders out from the edge before the hole’s even finished. A dropped tile at the supplier does the same kind of damage, just faster.

None of this means a masonry bit is useless around tile. It means the bit is fighting the wrong material for part of the job, and the part matters.

Drilling straight through a grout line is a completely different job from drilling through the glazed face of the tile itself, and most of the DIY guides online skip past that distinction entirely.

The grout itself is soft, sandy, and forgiving. A masonry bit chews through a grout joint without much drama, no diamond tip required. If a fixture’s mounting holes happen to land on the grout lines, a standard masonry bit and a steady hand get the job done.

The tile face is the part that punishes the wrong bit. Once the hole needs to land in the middle of a tile rather than the seam between two of them, that’s where diamond or carbide tile bits earn their keep and a plain masonry bit starts to be a gamble. We map fixture locations against the grout pattern before drilling whenever we can, purely because it saves a bit swap and a repair.

The Right Bit for Each Material

Porcelain is the dense one. Diamond-tipped bits are the standard here, wet or dry depending on the bit, because porcelain’s hardness burns through a carbide tip fast and a masonry bit even faster.

Ceramic tile is softer and more forgiving than porcelain, and a tungsten carbide spear-point bit handles it well without needing diamond. Push a carbide bit into porcelain, though, and the tip glazes over and goes dull in a hurry.

Natural stone, marble and travertine especially, behaves closer to porcelain than most people expect. Diamond bit, light pressure, patience.

Glass tile is its own animal entirely. Brittle in a way ceramic and porcelain aren’t, and it wants a specialized glass bit run at low speed with steady cooling. A masonry bit near glass tile is close to a guaranteed crack.

Wet Cutting vs Dry Cutting

Heat is what kills a drill bit and cracks a tile, more often than the bit choice itself. Diamond bits are sold in both wet and dry versions, and the difference comes down to how that heat gets managed.

Wet-rated bits get cooled with a steady trickle of water, either from a spray bottle a helper controls or a small guide that feeds water right to the tip. Dry-rated bits carry wax inside that melts during use and helps carry heat away, and they still benefit from a dip in cold water every few holes on a job with more than a handful to drill.

Skip the cooling step on either kind and the bit overheats, the tip glazes, and the tile underneath it takes the heat too. A bit that’s lost its edge from overheating drags across the glaze instead of cutting it, which is exactly the failure mode that cracks tile.

How to Drill the Hole Without Cracking It, and When to Swap to the Masonry Bit

Tap the spot first. A hollow, drum-like sound under the tile means it isn’t fully bonded to the substrate, and drilling into an unsupported tile is asking for a crack no matter which bit shows up. Solid, even sound everywhere means the tile’s sitting the way it should.

Mark the hole with a water-soluble pencil, then lay masking tape crosswise over the spot. The tape gives the bit something to grip on the first few turns instead of skating across bare glaze. A centre punch or a sturdy nail tapped gently into the marked spot does the same job for anyone using a bit that isn’t diamond-tipped.

Drill slow. No hammer function, not while the bit is still inside the tile. Light, steady pressure, letting the bit do the cutting instead of leaning on it. Cool the tip as you go, water or oil depending on the bit. Once the bit breaks through into the substrate behind the tile, that’s the moment to switch the hammer function back on and, if the job calls for it, swap over to the masonry bit for whatever’s on the other side.

Where the Masonry Bit Actually Belongs in This Job

Right here, on the other side of the tile. Once a hole’s punched clean through into the wall stud, the block wall behind a shower surround, or the concrete slab under a floor tile, that’s masonry territory and the diamond or carbide bit has done its job. Finishing the hole into brick or concrete with a tile bit just wears out an expensive bit on a material it wasn’t built for.

Two bits, one hole, in that order: tile bit through the glaze, masonry bit through whatever’s behind it. Trying to do the whole hole with either bit alone is where most of the cracked tiles and stripped-out anchors on a fixture-mounting job come from.

A dedicated ceramic tile installation job or a porcelain tile installation almost never involves this question at all, since accent holes and fixture prep get planned into the layout before the tile ever goes down. It’s the after-the-fact fixture mount, years into a finished bathroom, where the wrong bit choice shows up.

What a Cracked Finish Actually Costs to Fix

A cracked accent tile on a job that’s already finished isn’t a five-minute fix. Matching the glaze, the batch, and sometimes a discontinued colour is the hard part, not the labour. Pulling one tile out of a finished floor without disturbing its neighbours takes more care than setting a new one ever did.

Field tile is usually easier to source a match for than an accent or feature strip, which is one more reason to think twice before test-drilling a hole in a spot that shows. A quiet corner or an area rug covers a mistake on a floor. Eye-level bathroom tile doesn’t offer that same cover.
