A clean, correctly bonded original install makes that tear-out easier and produces less rubble to haul away. Overbuilt thinset beds, multiple layers of tile stacked on top of each other from past renovations, that is where a demo job turns into a dumpster full of debris instead of a manageable haul. Some of it, broken tile especially, can go into aggregate or road base rather than a landfill, depending on what the local waste facility accepts.
