Why Floor Tile Wants Grout in the Field
Feet, chair legs, dropped pans, dragged furniture. A floor takes abuse a wall corner never sees, and grout is the material rated to take it. Cured cement or epoxy grout resists abrasion in a way silicone simply doesn’t. Silicone stays soft, which means it picks up scuffs, tears at the edges under a dragged chair leg, and starts looking rough well before a grouted joint would.
Dirt is the other half of it. Silicone’s slightly tacky surface holds grit and tracked-in debris more than a hard cement joint does, and on a floor that grit gets ground into the seam every time someone walks across it. The cement mix sheds that traffic. Silicone collects it.
Subfloor movement matters here too, though less than most homeowners assume. A properly built floor substrate, backer board over a solid subfloor, doesn’t flex enough tile to tile for the joints to be a problem across the field. Large-format tile changes this math a little. Anything over roughly 15 inches per side moves more as a unit than small mosaic or standard 12×12 does, so some manufacturers call for a movement joint every so many feet even mid-field, not just at the perimeter. Fixing it means stripping every joint in the field back out and regrouting properly, which costs more in labour than doing it right the first time would have. The silicone has to come out clean, the joint has to be prepped, and then it’s a full re-do on a floor that’s already installed and in use.
Cost-wise, that redo isn’t cheap. A bag of the cement mix runs a fraction of what the labour bill comes to once someone’s cutting out old silicone joint by joint with a utility knife or a removal tool, careful not to gouge the tile edge on the way. Doing it right the first time takes a float, a sponge, and a cure window. Redoing a mis-filled floor takes all of that plus a full afternoon of demo first.
